REDCap

REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. REDCap is specifically geared to support online data capture for research studies, including GCP, 21 CFR Part 11, FISMA, and HIPAA-compliant environments. REDCap's streamlined process for rapidly creating and designing projects offers a vast array of tools that can be tailored to virtually any data collection strategy. REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields. REDCap’s flexibility with regard to data capture and storage and its easy-to-use reporting capabilities prove to be a desirable solution for making a research study’s data more accessible.

REDCap is licensed by the University of Alberta for internal not-for-profit use only. It is provided free of charge to University of Alberta researchers and their collaborators.

REDCap comes complete with a library of online learning resources and is so easy to use that many physicians, research assistants and graduate students have successfully completed REDCap based projects with minimal need for support.

Training and Support

WCHRI provides regular training sessions. They take the form of formal classroom sessions and informal drop-in sessions. All are open to the entire University of Alberta and AHS community and are free of charge.

WCHRI's REDCap team also provides general support through a team email address at redcap@ualberta.ca. We are available for extended support on a fee for service basis.

Getting Access to REDCap

Initial setup of an empty project is free of charge to WCHRI members. Alberta Health Services affiliated researchers and University of Alberta Faculty who are not WCHRI members can access REDCap free of charge through an arrangement with the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials and Research Centre. External investigators may be able to access REDCap if they have collaborators who are based at the University of Alberta or if they are members of a MICYRN affiliated research institute. Please email redcap@ualberta.ca if you need additional information.

Researchers with available funding can request a quotation for WCHRI’s informatics team to build and/or manage the project database on their behalf.
